Benefits of Taking a Skateboarding Class

Here are some of the things you will learn in your skateboarding class at Grays Ferry Crescent Skatepark:
  • How to choose the right skateboard: There are many different types of skateboards available, so it’s important to choose the right one for your needs. Your instructor can help you choose the right board for your size and skill level.
  • How to balance on your board: Balancing is the most important skill in skateboarding. Your instructor will teach you how to stand on your board and maintain your balance while pushing off and turning.
  • How to push off: Pushing off is how you get your skateboard moving forward. Your instructor will teach you how to push off properly so that you can generate enough speed to ride your board.
  • How to turn: Turning is another essential skateboarding skill. Your instructor will teach you how to turn your board in both directions so that you can navigate ramps and obstacles.
  • Safety precautions: Skateboarding can be a dangerous activity if not done safely. Your instructor will teach you about safety precautions, such as how to wear a helmet and knee pads, and how to fall safely.
  • Skatepark etiquette: Grays Ferry Crescent Skatepark is a shared space, so it’s important to be respectful of other skaters and pedestrians. Your instructor will teach you about skatepark etiquette, such as how to take turns and how to signal to other skaters.
Our skateboarding classes typically begin with a warm-up period. This helps to prepare your body for the physical activity of skateboarding. Once you are warmed up, your instructor will teach you the basics of skateboarding, such as how to balance on your board, push off, turn, and stop. You will also learn about safety precautions and how to fall safely.
Once you have learned the basics, you will start practicing on ramps and obstacles. Your instructor will supervise you and provide you with feedback. You will also have the opportunity to meet other skaters and learn from them.
If you're interested in learning to skateboard, we encourage you to sign up for a class at Skate The Foundry at Grays Ferry Crescent Skatepark. Our classes are a great way to learn the basics of skateboarding in a safe and fun environment.

Skate the Foundry has been amazing for my kiddo and their love of skateboarding! Brett and the team at Skate The Foundry have helped my child develop such a love of skateboarding and has built so much confidence in it over the past 6 months of lessons with Lilah! We were lucky enough to host their birthday party there this past weekend and it was SO MUCH FUN. The kiddos were all raving, and Brett, Lilah and Possum created the best vibes. Such a fun skate lesson and games and fun for the kids. Couldn't recommend this spot more highly.

Brett was great with my son. He had an awesome time and gained a ton of confidence. Couldn't be happier with this place. The complete boards were "really cool".

My son (6) took at private lesson here last week and am so happy with our experience. The owner is so kind, helpful, and professional and his team is so dedicated to their craft and teaching others the love of skateboarding. They took all the intimidation out of it, and taught my son so many useful tips in such a short period of time. This is truly a Philly gem and would definitely recommend to beginners, especially kids who just need a quality mentor!

Amazing classes. Amazing staff. Everyone is so welcoming and knowledgeable. After attending one class, I felt empowered to skate every day. Lilah was a great instructor and I look forward to being a part of this wonderful skate community! I am a newer skater and I met some really good friends who gave great tips. Kevin is a manager at the store, and he was really kind and supportive. Honestly love this place. Open Skate is pretty open on weekdays and everyone is so supportive.

Amazing spot to learn to skate for all levels! I’ve been skating since I was a kid, but never had the guts to Ollie or ride half pipes. Within my first 10 mins of a private lesson with Brett, I landed an Ollie that was 27 years in the making! One of the best feelings ever. Great for kids, but also really great for adults who want to learn or develop their abilities. Will definitely be back soon
