Skateboarding and Education: A Perfect Pairing for Modern Schools

Comments Off on Skateboarding and Education: A Perfect Pairing for Modern Schools

Introducing skateboarding as a school program can be a transformative addition to the educational environment, offering numerous benefits for both students and the school community. I wish my school had a skateboarding program when I was still studying! One can imagine the positive impact it would have had not only for me but also for my classmates and schoolmates. Here, we explore the advantages and challenges of implementing skateboarding in schools, along with examples of successful programs.

Advantages of Skateboarding in Schools

1. Enhancing Physical Education – Incorporating skateboarding into Physical Education (PE) classes can promote physical fitness and agility. It provides a fun and engaging way for students to stay active, improving their overall health and well-being. Additionally, it’s not like those typical sports that school already offers.

2. Boosting Mental Health – Skateboarding is not just a physical activity; it also positively impacts mental health. The concentration and focus required can help reduce stress and anxiety, promoting a healthier mental state for students. This improved focus can also translate to better concentration in academic subjects, benefiting both students and the school.

3. Teaching Patience and Perseverance – Learning to skateboard involves mastering various tricks and techniques, which teaches students the values of patience and perseverance. These skills are transferable to other areas of life, helping students overcome challenges both in and out of school.

4. Encouraging Group Activities – Encouraging Group Activities – Skateboarding is a perfect group activity, fostering teamwork and camaraderie among students.  Learning together and supporting each other during practice sessions strengthens social bonds and collaboration. It can definitely be a lot of fun for everyone involved, including teachers, skateboard instructors, and students!

Challenges of Implementing Skateboarding Programs

1. Safety Concerns – Safety is naturally a primary concern when introducing skateboarding in schools. In my personal opinion, not all parents would be comfortable with their children participating, which is entirely understandable.  However, ensuring that students have access to proper safety gear, certified instructors, and designated safe learning environments can significantly minimize the risk of injuries.

2. Adequate Skating Areas – Not all schools have the necessary space for a skateboarding program. This challenge can be addressed by partnering with local skateparks or businesses with suitable facilities. Collaboration can provide students with a safe and designated area to practice skateboarding, while fostering a positive relationship between the school and the community.

3. Curriculum Integration –  Integrating skateboarding into the school curriculum presents a significant challenge, perhaps the most significant one. Schools must find ways to seamlessly incorporate it without disrupting existing programs. Collaboration with established skateboarding programs, such as Skate The Foundry’s adaptable children’s lessons, can offer valuable resources and support, facilitating a smooth integration of skateboarding into the educational curriculum.

Some schools have already successfully integrated skateboarding into their curriculum. A notable example is the Swedish Bryggeriet High School, which has embraced skateboarding as part of its educational program. A video showcasing their initiative highlights how skateboarding has helped students become more proactive and develop a positive attitude toward schoolwork.

If the school cannot add skateboarding to its programs, there’s always our very own Skate The Foundry’s After School Club. This program, running for several years now, teaches children from different schools about skateboarding and offers participation in our skateboard art workshops.

Bringing skateboarding to schools offers a unique opportunity to enhance physical and mental health, teach valuable life skills, and foster a sense of community among students. While there are challenges to overcome, with proper planning, collaboration, and safety measures, skateboarding can become a beneficial addition to the school curriculum.
